2iE Strengthens Language Training with Speexx, Reaching 1,000 Courses in Six Months

2iE, the International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering, partnered with Speexx to enhance its face-to-face language courses. The digital training supports students alongside their traditional classes, and is also available to selected staff and faculty members.
About
The International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering, known as 2iE, is an engineering school and a member of the Conférence des Grandes Écoles (CGE). Based in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, West Africa, it was founded through a collaboration of 14 West and Central African states committed to developing local leadership to meet regional economic needs.
Originally formed in 1968 as two institutions—EIER and ETSHER—2iE was created through their merger in 2006. Since then, the institute has focused on innovation, research, and sustainable development, addressing the priorities of a rapidly growing continent. To support this mission, 2iE partnered with Speexx to strengthen its language training program and enhance the impact of existing in-person instruction.
Speexx is a platform with diverse content and training programs appreciated by both our students and professionals. The four core language skills are central to the training, and the live sessions with native-speaking coaches are especially popular. Our learners are also highly engaged with the videos and modules that prepare them for international language certification.
Challenge
2iE was looking for a digital solution to complement its on-site language courses—not to replace them, but to boost their effectiveness by improving students’ practical language skills, particularly in English. The solution also needed to foster peer interaction and support the international employability of graduates. Speexx was selected for its comprehensive, interactive platform tailored to the needs of both learners and the institution.
Solution
2iE selected Speexx for its digital English training solution. The platform enables students and selected staff to develop their skills through self-paced micro-learning activities. Content such as articles and videos from international media is tailored to each user’s interests, as well as comprehension quizzes and interactive comment sections.
Learners also have access to a dedicated skills area to improve vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. In addition, they can join virtual group classes on topics of their choice, led by certified language trainers—encouraging cultural exchange and peer networking.
Outcome
The implementation of Speexx at 2iE in April 2024 has been a clear success. Although the platform is not mandatory, 777 students registered in the first month alone. Within six months, that number had grown to over 1,000 active learners enrolled in Speexx digital English courses. During this period, the platform recorded 23,932 connections and saw learner participation rise by more than 30%.
Speexx and 2iE continue to work closely, launching joint initiatives to drive long-term engagement and ensure sustained impact across the student body.
Outlook
Speexx will continue supporting 2iE in delivering English training to its students. To strengthen engagement, SMART goals have been established—focused on progressing through CEFR levels and boosting participation in virtual classrooms. Speexx will also provide detailed reporting tools and targeted learning activities to help track progress and sustain learner motivation throughout their development journey.
