The European Institute of Oncology (IEO) is a Scientific Institute for Research, Hospitalization, and Care (IRCCS), internationally recognized as a comprehensive cancer center active in three key areas: clinical care, research, and training. Founded in 1994 by Umberto Veronesi, IEO was established to address the growing oncological emergency and to introduce an innovative model of care, research, and organization.
In an increasingly global context, English has become a strategic skill for ensuring effective care and promoting multidisciplinary collaboration. For this reason, IEO adopted the Speexx platform, investing in the linguistic and professional development of its healthcare and administrative staff through flexible, personalized training programs.

Challenge
IEO’s main goal was to provide all staff, both clinical and non-clinical, with an effective tool to improve their English comprehension and communication skills through a platform flexible enough to fit their busy schedules. Compared with the previous provider, a key challenge was the need to customize content based on department, role, and seniority.
IEO therefore sought a more flexible, scalable solution that could offer clear visibility of results and a partner capable of supporting the project through continuous consulting and guidance.
An English patient transferred from another emergency room with a diagnosis of gynecological cancer was terrified because she didn’t understand her situation. Thanks to Speexx training, I was able to explain everything clearly. She felt welcomed, a connection was formed, and I was reminded why I want to keep improving my English.
Solution
To encourage platform adoption and highlight its benefits, IEO immediately launched a communication plan with emails, video tutorials, and guides, achieving steady growth in membership and positive feedback. After targeted evaluation, Speexx Core was activated for all employees and Expert Pro for 50 key professionals (doctors, researchers, nurses).
Among the most appreciated features are the media library with tailored content (e.g., on topics such as “Medicine & Health” and “Science”) and one-to-one live coaching, which allows users to change trainers to experience different accents and approaches, as well as discuss a variety of topics, including current events. Users also appreciate the immediate feedback on their progress and the opportunity to discuss authentic materials, such as slides, presentations, and clinical content.
Outcome
Offering a practical learning tool and benefit such as the Speexx platform enables IEO to demonstrate a concrete commitment to developing staff skills, which improves the working environment and strengthens the confidence and awareness of its employees.
Training has also been included in the 2024 Sustainability Report and recognized as an added value that supports the daily organization of doctors and staff, thanks to a cross-functional approach that goes beyond language learning.
Feedback indicates a significant improvement in communication with international patients and in the drafting of protocols and scientific papers in English. The variety of content and flexibility of the platform continue to drive engagement and foster a more collaborative and positive workplace culture.
Outlook
IEO intends to continue its collaboration with Speexx, extending the use of the platform to an even larger number of colleagues. The goal is to make English a cross-functional and consolidated skill that supports institute staff in daily clinical communication, scientific production, and international projects.
